Sequences on a black background

I was very struck by the talent of dancer Andreana Notaro and was deeply inspired by her experimentation with ballet and butoh: the rigour, slowness and control of even her tiniest movements, and particularly her ability to stay and resist.

I took this sequence of photographs in 2002. At the time, and partly due to my meeting with the dancer, I started to develop an interest in the representation of women, which led to several projects produced with Camera21 regarding female stereotypes and models and the way in which they are promulgated.

The first picture at the bottom on the left was featured in the “DONNEXDONNE – la fotografia d’autore e QVC a favore di HBI” collective exhibition curated by Manuela De Leonardis and held at the Galleria del Cembalo in Rome in October 2014
